YOU ARE FROM TURKEY AND YOU WANT TO GET AN ONTARIO DRIVER’S LICENSE? THIS STEP-BY-STEP DRIVER’S LICENSE ARTICLE IS FOR YOU!

Hello Dear Friends,

Are you from Turkey and planning to get a driver’s license in Ontario, Canada? What steps should you follow for G1, G2, and G licenses?

Should you go for a G2 license or a G license?

Is getting a direct G license just a dream?

Let’s dive into this week’s article to answer your questions.

Step 1: What to do first?

Get your license translated.

You can have this done by booking an appointment through the consulate’s website or using the services of ATIO (Association of Translators and Interpreters of Ontario). Avoid bringing translations done in Turkey.

Note: If you’re using an ATIO member for translation, you’ll also need to download your driving record from the e-Devlet platform and have it translated. You can find ATIO-certified translators and their contact details at: https://atio.on.ca/directory/.

IMPORTANT: If you have at least 2 years of driving experience in Turkey, you are eligible to take the G Full license test. If you have less than 2 years of experience, you’ll need to wait until you’ve accumulated 2 years.

NOTE 2: Whether or not a translation is required depends on the officer handling your case. Some officers process applications without a translation, while others require it.

Step 2: Take the G1 Written Test

You can take this test with any of the following documents: passport, student ID, residency permit, work permit, refugee documentation (yellow sheet), or any other document proving your immigration status.

Note: You don’t need a translation of your Turkish driver’s license for the G1 test. However, the translation will be required for the G test. If you don’t bring translations to the test center, you can still get your G1 license, but you’ll need to return later to process the translations.

During the test, you will undergo a vision test, and your photo will be taken. Don’t forget your glasses or contact lenses if you use them. Gentlemen, mind your hair; ladies, as always, you’re ready and looking great 😊.

How Much Will You Pay?

G1 Test Fee: $106 + $91.25 for the G test (if you bring translations).

G1 Test Fee: $106 + $53.75 for the G2 test (if you don’t bring translations initially. Later, you’ll need to pay an additional $91.25 for the G test. Once you pass, you can request a $53.75 refund at the test center).

Is Getting a G License Really That Hard?

It’s not as difficult as some people make it out to be. Don’t be discouraged by those who failed and say things like, “The test is too hard,” or “The examiner was biased.” Prepare according to the G test evaluation criteria, and I recommend reading my article explaining these criteria before your test.

FAQs

Question 1: What is the G1 written test like, and how do I prepare?

Answer: The G1 written test includes questions about traffic signs and rules. You can prepare by reading the Official MTO Driver’s Handbook. The test is available in Turkish. It includes 20 questions about traffic signs and 20 about traffic rules. You are allowed up to 4 mistakes in each section. If you fail one section, you can retake it for $16.

Question 2: Are old-style Turkish licenses accepted?

Answer: Yes, old-style licenses are accepted.

Question 3: I lost my license but have a photocopy. Is it accepted?

Answer: No, the original license is required. If you’re a refugee with over 2 years of driving experience, you can still take the G2 and G tests, but your experience will be calculated as one day less than 2 years.

Question 4: Can I get a license with a tourist visa in Ontario?

Answer: Yes, you can take the G1 written test with your passport.

Question 5: I have driving experience from Turkey, but I’ve heard the G road test is very hard. Should I take the G2 test instead?

Answer: If you prepare according to the G test evaluation criteria, you can take the G test without hesitation. Focus on understanding how you’ll be assessed and practice accordingly.

Question 6: I just arrived from Turkey and don’t have a license. How long do I need to wait to get a G2 license?

Answer: The waiting period between G1 and G2 is 1 year. With a course certificate, this can be reduced to 8 months. Completing 30 hours of online courses and 10 hours of in-car training will earn you a certificate that can also lower your insurance premiums by $500–$1200 annually.

Question 7: Where do you recommend taking the G1 written test?

Answer: Avoid busy downtown centers as they often have long lines. Centers in northern areas tend to have shorter wait times. You can take the test at any center in Ontario.

Question 8: Can I surrender my license when applying for an Ontario Photo Card?

Answer: No, do not surrender your license. You’ll need it to validate your driving experience.

Question 9: I have driving experience but don’t speak English. Can I still take the road test?

Answer: Yes. Instructors prepare you for the entire test process, including dialogues and commands.

Question 10: Can I rent a car with a G1 license?

Answer: No, you cannot rent a car with a G1 license.

Question 11: How can I drive with a G1 license?

Answer: You can drive with someone who has at least 4 years of G license experience. However, you can only drive on highways with a licensed driving instructor.

Question 12: How long can I drive in Ontario with my Turkish license?

Answer: Visitors can use their license for up to 3 months. After that, an International Driver’s Permit is required.

Question 13: Can I buy a car with a G1 license?

Answer: No, you cannot buy a car with a G1 license.

Question 14: I get an error when booking an appointment online. What should I do?

Answer: Enter the “Driver’s Licence Expiry” date by adding 5 years to the “Effective Date” listed on your license. For example, if the effective date is 2023/01/01, enter 2028/01/01.
