PAY ATTENTION TO THESE WHEN SELLING YOUR CAR!

Hello Dear Friends,

Be cautious when selling your car!

When we first came to Canada, we were told, “This country is so safe that you don’t even need to lock your house or car doors.” However, in recent years, theft rates have skyrocketed.

80,000 CARS STOLEN!

Did you know that 80,000 cars have been stolen in Canada just this year? Last week, someone listed their car worth $65,000 on the Autotrader app and arranged to meet with a buyer. The buyer took advantage of the seller’s distraction and drove off with the car. The vehicle’s whereabouts are now unknown.

What should you do when selling your car privately? Let’s take a look.

1. ASK FOR A DRIVER’S LICENSE!

Politely request the buyer’s license before they enter the vehicle, explaining that this is for security purposes. (Dealerships also do this.)

2. DON’T HAND OVER THE KEYS!

If the car requires a key to start, only give the key when you’re seated in the car with the buyer during the test drive. Never hand over the key or allow the buyer to take the car for a test drive alone. Always keep your phone with you.

3. CHECK FOR TRACKING DEVICES!

Pay attention to the buyer’s behavior, especially with high-value vehicles. Make sure they haven’t placed a tracking device (e.g., Airtag) in your car.

4. RECEIVE PAYMENT BEFORE HANDING OVER THE REGISTRATION!

Do not sign or hand over the vehicle’s registration until you’ve received full payment.

5. GET A SIGNATURE!

Prepare a document with details such as the date, vehicle mileage, VIN number, and the agreed sale price. Have the buyer sign it.

6. MEET IN A PUBLIC AREA!

Choose a busy public area for the meeting. The presence of others will discourage ill-intentioned individuals. If the buyer refuses this location, cancel the meeting.

7. DON’T GO ALONE!

Bring a family member or friend with you if possible.

A Final Note

Don’t leave your car keys near your front door. Thieves can use signal amplifiers to intercept and replicate key signals, making it easier to steal vehicles.

Some of these tips might seem excessive, but all of them are based on real incidents.

Wishing you safety for both yourself and your belongings.
