MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT THE G2 DRIVER’S LICENSE!

Hello Dear Friends,

This week, I’ll address common misconceptions about the G2 license and answer some frequently asked questions. I hope this article clears up the confusion and misinformation surrounding the G2 license.

What’s the most common misconception about the G2 license?

Let’s see if you can guess!

The most widespread myth is that you cannot drive on highways with a G2 license.

The truth: You absolutely can drive on highways with a G2 license. Yay! Isn’t that great news? From now on, feel free to hit the highways with confidence. If you’re nervous about highway driving, I recommend reading my previous article on “Highway Driving Tips for New Drivers.” You can find it in this group or contact me directly to request a copy.

Another misconception is that you can’t drive at night with a G2 license.

The truth: You can drive at any time of the day or night and on any road with a G2 license.

Can I shorten the waiting period to upgrade from G2 to G?

Answer: No. If you don’t have a driving history from your home country, you must wait 12 months after obtaining your G2 license to take the G test. This waiting period cannot be shortened.

Another myth: You can’t drive in the U.S. with a G2 license.

The truth: Driving with a G2 license in the U.S. depends on the rules of the state you’re visiting. Some states allow it, while others impose restrictions. I recommend checking with the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in the state you’re traveling to for specific regulations.

Special G2 license rules apply to drivers aged 19 and under.

1. In the first 6 months after obtaining your G2 license, you may only carry 1 passenger aged 19 or under between midnight and 5 AM.

2. After the first 6 months, you may carry up to 3 passengers aged 19 or under during the same hours.

Important Note: These rules do not apply if:

• You have a passenger with at least 4 years of G license experience in the vehicle, or

• The passengers are immediate family members, such as parents or siblings.

How long is a G2 license valid?

A G2 license is valid for 5 years. The expiry date is printed on your license. If you let your G2 license expire, you’ll need to retake both the G1 and G2 tests.

(Note: Due to COVID-19, license expirations have been extended indefinitely for licenses expiring from March 2020 onwards, until further notice.)

Can I renew my G2 license?

No, you cannot renew a G2 license. You must pass the G test to upgrade your license.

Alcohol and passenger rules for G2 drivers:

Zero alcohol tolerance: G2 drivers must maintain a 0.00% blood alcohol level while driving.

• You may only carry as many passengers as there are seatbelts in the vehicle.

Final Note:

Regardless of the license you hold, never drive under the influence of alcohol. If you’ve been drinking, do not touch your car. Call for an Uber or Lyft instead. Protect your life and the lives of others on the road.
