👉 USING A DIFFERENT ADDRESS FOR INSURANCE!
Hello Dear Friends,
Due to the high cost of insurance, people often register addresses in distant cities to reduce costs. However, I want to inform you about the potential risks associated with this practice.
âť—IN CASE OF A FINEâť—
🚔 A few months ago, a student of mine called to say that the police had confiscated both their driver’s license and vehicle.
The reason? The officer explained: “Two camera fines were issued earlier, and they were not paid.”
📬 The fines were sent to the address in Niagara registered “to save on insurance,” but the people living at that address didn’t inform the car owner about the mail.
Since the fines went unpaid, the driver’s license was temporarily suspended.
👉 Beyond the unpaid fines, having your license temporarily revoked, losing access to your vehicle on the way to work, and facing complications with insurance companies can cause significant stress.
👉 Due to such incidents, the insurance company may consider you a high-risk client. You might even struggle to find an insurance provider for your vehicle.
âť—IN CASE OF SERIOUS, INJURY-RELATED, OR FATAL ACCIDENTSâť—
If you cause a major accident and face legal action:
📱 The insurance company may request roaming records from your telecom provider for the past year. For instance, your address is registered in Niagara, but you live in Toronto and have never been to Niagara. This inconsistency could land you in trouble.
👉 If you’re involved in an accident and your insurance company discovers that you provided false information, they may reject your claim entirely.
👉 Depending on the severity of the accident, this could leave you responsible for repair costs, medical expenses, and even tens of thousands of dollars in legal fees.
👉 If your insurance company denies your claim due to fraud, you’ll be required to cover all expenses out of pocket.
👉 Failing to pay these costs could impact your credit score, making it difficult to buy a new car or secure future insurance coverage.
Dear Friends,
I’ve heard, witnessed, and read about hundreds of such incidents in Canada. My police colleagues have shared similar stories with me. Insurance companies are commercial entities and may refuse to act on false declarations. Even a seemingly minor misrepresentation could expose you to a multimillion-dollar lawsuit.
This may be a somewhat frustrating read (it was for me to write 🙂), but I believe having this knowledge is crucial for the decisions you’ll make in the future. You can find my other articles at www.ehliyet.ca.
